The eight-year-old union between a couple, Mary James and Chibuike James, was recently dissolved by Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State on account of threat to life and constant molestation.
According to The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in his judgment, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade held that the court ended the union between Mary and Chibuke so as to forestall a case of disorder and blood shed.
He granted custody of the set of twins produced by the duo to the plaintiff and directed the respondent to pay N10,000 as the children’s monthly feeding allowance in addition to being responsible for their education and other welfare.
Earlier, Mary had informed the court that she arrived at the decision of parting ways with her husband because he was threatening her life with battery.
“The more I tried to swallow the pains of my mistake of ever knowing Chibuike, the more he subjects me to physical, psychological and emotional trauma.
“After he lured me into marrying him, he started molesting and physically abusing me despite the fact that he doesn’t feed me.
“I discovered late that he has another wife who he dotes and treats with dignity
“Chibuike monitors me and even prevents me from running my beer business.
“He believes that my male customers sleep with me and therefore gives me nothing for food.
“Recently, after beating me mercilessly, he hit my chest against a dangerous object, vowing to dent my beauty. It was our neighbours who rescued me from his hands and rushed me to the hospital,” Mary said.
Opposing the suit, the respondent refuted all the allegations leveled against him.
Chibuke, a businessman, contended that his wife’s middle name should be adultery and that it was often the cause of the misunderstanding between both of them.
“I warned Mary to stop wearing provocative dresses, but she refused to listen to me. She’s a liar. I fend for her and the children.
“I truly love Mary, though I have another wife and I pray the court not to separate us,” Chibuike said.
