Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration following the federal government’s decision to freeze $2.2 billion in funding.
The university decried the move as an “unprecedented and improper” exercise of control.
“The consequences of the government’s overreach will be severe and long-lasting,” said Harvard President Alan Garber on Monday.
The lawsuit, submitted in the federal district court in Massachusetts, accuses the administration of violating the First Amendment and other federal statutes.
The 51-page complaint urges a federal judge to rule the administration’s “freeze order” unconstitutional and to mandate its reversal.
The legal action follows President Trump’s announcement last week of a freeze on federal funding after Harvard declined to comply with certain demands purportedly aimed at addressing antisemitism on campus.
“The Government has not — and cannot — identify any rational connection between antisemitism concerns and the medical, scientific, technological, and other research it has frozen that aims to save American lives, foster American success, preserve American security, and maintain America’s position as a global leader in innovation,” the complaint states.
