The process of challenging the contentious September 22/27 governorship election in Osun State which started on October 17, 2018 in Osogbo, the state capital, will come to an end today as Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will in few minutes times deliver its judgment.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate in the election, Senator Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke, filed a petition, marked EPT/OS/GOV/1/2018, challenging the emergence of Governor Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola as winner of the election.
They alleged that the election was marred with massive rigging, over-voting, vote buying and other forms of malpractices and that the election was not conducted by INEC in compliance with the law.
They, therefore, prayed the tribunal to declare them as winners of the election on the ground that they scored majority of the lawful votes in the election held on September 22, 2018.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Governor Oyetola and APC were joined as respondents in the petition.
As of the time of filing this, the courtroom where the tribunal conducts its proceedings since moving to Abuja, the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Apo, is full to capacity with lawyers and politicians from both PDP and APC.
Everyone is currently waiting on the Justice Ibrahim Sirajo-led three-man panel is to deliver the much-anticipated judgment, which will be done any moment from now.
