The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has announced plans to eliminate the use of the dollar for Hajj-related payments, aiming to reduce the rising cost of Hajj fares and make the pilgrimage more affordable for Nigerians.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Emir of Argungu, NAHCON Chairman Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman highlighted how dollar-based transactions for services like flights have inflated the cost of Hajj, putting it beyond the reach of many Nigerians.
He commended the Federal Government for its support, including the Hajj subsidy, but raised concerns about late payment of Hajj fares, which has often resulted in Nigeria failing to meet its allocated quota of pilgrims.

The Chairman urged traditional and religious leaders to advocate for the transition to Naira payments, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to engage service providers and other stakeholders.
Although Umrah pilgrims currently pay in Naira, international airlines and key service providers still demand dollars for Hajj operations, creating additional hurdles.
Professor Saleh stated that eliminating the reliance on dollar payments could significantly slash Hajj fares by 2025, opening the door for more Nigerians to fulfill their spiritual obligations.
