The tension created by the activities of suspected Niger Delta militants in Ewedogbon area of Lagos State continued on Wednesday as gunshots pervaded the area.
Residents of the area ran into different directions till the gunshots, which lasted for over 30 minutes, subsided.
It was later discovered that the gunshots were from a detachment of soldiers, who invaded the area with the aim of completely dislodging the militants from the area.
Meanwhile the state police stated that policemen from the Marine Department, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) will sustain a surveillance patrol in the area as parts of the efforts to end the menace of the militants.
While the gun battle was on, a fleeing resident who spoke with Nigerian Tribune hurriedly said, “I want to go and pick some of my loads. The militants are shooting and battling the soldiers. I think the soldiers are having is the challenge of battling the militants at the swampy part of the river.”
The image maker in charge of the state police command, Dolapo Badmos, while speaking on the incident, said “the command has dominated the area. We are planning to sustain that for a long period of time while the Marine Police Command is stepping up their operation. We are not leaving anything to chance.”
