Group warns Nigerians over El-Rufai’s shifting alliances

The Northern Conscience Movement (NCM) has raised concerns about former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s recent admiration for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, questioning the authenticity of his convictions.

El-Rufai had previously criticized Abubakar, labeling him a “liar” and accusing him of harboring an “obsession for power” and being “haunted by his corruption demon.”

The NCM believes El-Rufai’s sudden change of stance may be driven by political expediency rather than genuine respect or camaraderie, especially in light of his recent fallout with President Bola Tinubu. This shift has raised questions about the integrity and consistency of El-Rufai’s political relationships.

The movement also criticized El-Rufai’s engagement with prominent PDP figures, including Abubakar and Aminu Tambuwal, in their outreach to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as disingenuous and potentially divisive. They expressed concern over Buhari’s receptiveness to this coalition, deeming it insensitive given the prevailing political tensions.

The NCM advocates for a political culture rooted in integrity, accountability, and a genuine commitment to the welfare of Nigerians. It urges citizens to remain engaged and critical of political discourse, prioritizing national interests over personal ambition.

The group’s coordinator, Lawal Nuhu Ahmed, emphasized the need for Nigerians to be vigilant and discerning in the face of shifting political alliances. “We cannot afford to be swayed by politicians who prioritize their personal interests over the welfare of the nation,” he said.

The NCM’s statement highlights the complexities of Nigerian politics, where ideological consistency is frequently sacrificed on the altar of power and influence. The group’s call for transparency and accountability serves as a reminder of the need for leaders who place the nation’s interests above personal gain.

In light of these developments, the NCM is urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and to demand more from their leaders. The group believes that only through active participation and scrutiny can citizens foster a political environment that truly reflects the will and aspirations of the people.
