Group donates household items to IDPs in Benue

International Organisation for Migration (IOM) on Wednesday donated essential household materials to Internally Displaced Persons in Benue.

Also, the United Nations (UN) donated 2,000 prepared sets of dignity kits to preserve the dignity of women and girls while in the camps.

The Chief of Mission, Mr Laurent De Boeck of IOM in Nigeria who made the donation at Ichwa IDP camp in Makurdi said that the non food items were to support the inmates while in camp.

Some of the items donated are Blanket (1.4-2kg,medium thermal type,woven dry raised bothside) Cooking Pot 7Ltrs (Aluminium Locally Made,with lid, bowl shaped) Rechargeable solar Lamp (3x1000mAH.Aa size dry battery, battery duration 4hrs,6LED).

Others were; Laundry soap(250g,11.5 x 7cm, not harmful to the skin) Stainless Tray (40CM, 200 series NOVA or 555) 20 Ltr jerrycan with IOM logo(29×5, 21×26.5cm, yellow with red lid, 300g) Kitchen Knife (Stainless Steel and wooden Handle, 29CM) Reusable Sanitary pad(waterproof layer of PUL, winged) kettle-No3 (Polyethylene with lid, 2L, includes handle & spout with no sharp edges) Kitchen Knife (Stainless Steel and wooden Handle,29CM) Bath soap(200g, fatty acid min 70% NaOH contentnmax 0.3%)

Serving Spoon(Stainless Steel, Solid,35ml,,35CM length) 10litre Basin(Heavy durty,polyethylene,injection moulded,18x33x23cm)

“Rope (10mm diam, twisted, 30m length per kit). In metres Packaging bag with IOM Logo bothside (Blue)(100x100cm,50kg cap,190g/m2+/-20g/m2 tarpaulin with ropes handles Synthetic mat (180 x 0.90M,tightly woven with weave fabric,pure virgin polypropylene(PP))

Cooking Pot 5Ltrs (Aluminium Locally Made,with lid, bowl shaped) Stainless Cups 0.3L (200 series NOVA or 555)2 Stainless Cups 0.4L (200 series NOVA or 555) Stainless Cups 0.5L (200 series NOVA or 555) 10L Bucket (heavy duty plastic, with metallic handle, 100g) NaDCC Disinfection Tablets (in Sachets).

User guidance leaflets are strongly recommended to be included in the kit. Mr De Boeck led the delegation which also included members of the North -East Ambassadors Group, UN Delegation all headed by the IOM Chief of Mission, Mr De Boeck.

He said there was a need for collaboration between the State Government and development partners for effective and efficient handling of the humanitarian crises in the State, De Boeck said.

He applauded the State Government for its manner of attending to IDPs and urged the state to redouble its efforts to actualise the identified durable solutions.

Dr Mathew Onoja, the Humanitarian SRH analyst to UNFPA who made donations of 2,000 health kits, on behalf of the United Nations said that the purpose of the kits was to preserve the dignity of women and girls while in the camps.

Dr Onoja said “all women irrespective of wherever, they may need their dignity intact”.

Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacient Alia while receiving the team led by Chief of Mission Laurent De Boeck of International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Nigeria said the State Government would on Thursday launch the Rapid Response Fund.

The Rapid Respond Fund, according to the governor is an initiative made possible through the collaboration of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United States Agency for International Development’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance (USAID-BHA).

Represented by his deputy, Sam Ode, the governor said the presence of their presence in the state representing Ambassadors, High Commissioners, heads of international financing institutions, the United Nations, and other international bodies.
