Group dismisses claims North won’t back Tinubu in 2027

The Northern Majority Alliance (NOMAL) has dismissed claims by groups that the North will not support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, asserting that the administration’s accomplishments and policies nearing two years in office have further endeared him to the region.

It pointed out that allegations of non-performance and exclusion of the North in governance are false and merely a calculated strategy to sow discord.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting with representatives from the 19 Northern states, signed by its Coordinator, Ibrahim Bunu, the group highlighted that the initial disillusionment with the president over the Muslim-Muslim ticket had subsided due to the performance of the Tinubu-led administration.

According to the group, reports from remote villages and urban communities in the North confirm overwhelming support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, adding that NOMAL’s support is rooted in the president’s achievements and inclusivity.

“In 2023, many non-Hausa-Fulani tribes in the North voted for Peter Obi, expressing concerns over the Muslim-Muslim ticket. However, two years into the Tinubu presidency, his policies and performance have demonstrated an unshakeable commitment to the development and inclusion of all Nigerians, including the North.

“We are aware of attempts to sow discord in the North through rumours of reshuffling key positions in the current administration, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). Such distractions will not derail our focus. Our priority remains ensuring the North’s collective interests are represented.

“The success of the Muslim-Muslim ticket demonstrates unity and performance that transcend religious or ethnic affiliations. We remain open to similar combinations in the future, including a Christian-Christian ticket, provided it serves Nigeria’s best interests.”

The group, which noted that many ethnic groups in the North have endured decades of marginalisation, deprivation, and neglect, called for deliberate policies to empower marginalised communities, create new states, and address inequities.

It therefore urged Northern governors in indigenous enclaves to amplify their people’s voices, particularly in their support for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

The group further urged the presidency to expedite action on the establishment of the North Central Development Commission, adding that the initiative is expected to address developmental imbalances across Northern Nigeria, ensuring equitable progress alongside existing regional commissions.
