The Federal Government recently gave Nigerian workers a reason to hope for a happy festive season. President Buhari was reported to have urged the state governors to utilise the next tranche of the Paris Club funds that would be made available to the state governments to pay the salaries of workers.
Some have suggested that Buhari was merely playing politics with this statement. But even if he was, that point is not relevant.
What Nigerian workers want is their salaries. They want to enjoy the Christmas and New Year festivities. No more, no less.
In this regard, I urge the state governors to pay the workers in time. For far too long, Nigerian workers have suffered untold hardship because of the non-payment or delay of salaries.
This has to stop. The suffering in the land is too much and if workers are allowed to experience agony at Christmas, that will be a tragedy.
