Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf,has reiterated his administration’ s commitment towards building a stronger, harmonious relationship with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) as part of drive to entrench good governance and active citizen participation.
He made the pledge at the opening of a two-day Kano State Civil Society Conference, organised by the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs in Kano.
According to him ” CSOs , have a critical role to play in tracking how governance is being handled,”
Gov Yusuf further stated that the CSO play a unique role by “Amplify the voices of the vulnerable, monitor government actions, and mobilize citizens for meaningful participation.’
As in Kano, your resilience has been evident in areas of education, health care, gender justice, climate action, anti-corruption advocacy, and conflict resolutions’ he said
Gov Yusuf then added, “Your role is indispensable, especially at a time when democratic governance is being tested by socio-political and economic challenges.”
He urged CSOs to remain dedicated, avoid corruption, and shun sentiments in the course of their daily activities.
We appeal to you to help enlighten the public on the dangers of social vices such as thuggery and the sharing of fake news, and to promote peace and harmony across the state.”
Speaking on his behalf at the occasion his deputy, Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, said the Governor described civil society as a vital watchdog in ensuring transparency and accountability.
Governor Yusuf noted that the conference offered a unique platform for government officials, academics, and civil society actors to exchange ideas on moving the state forward.
“Today’s gathering is more than just a conference, but rather a practical demonstration of statement of partnership between government, civil society, academia, and development actors united under the theme empowering civil society organizations in Kano State for a sustainable future, uniting for active democratic participation and grassroots development.
Let me reiterate that civil society organisations are the conscience of the society,” he said
Earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya, stated that the forum was designed to enhance effective service delivery and strengthen collaboration between government and non-state actors.
He emphasised, “The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is running a transparent government and welcomes genuine criticism aimed at improving service delivery.”
“We urge participants to deliberate on issues that will deepen good governance and cement a mutual working relationship between CSOs and government.”
The event, themed “Empowering CSOs in Kano for Sustainable, Active Democratic Participation and Grassroots Development,” drew participants from a wide range of organisations operating within and outside the state.
