Gov Diri, others greet Nigerians at Christmas

Governor of Bayelsa, Senator Douye Diri, has admonished Christians and privileged individuals to reach out to those who do not have to enable them to celebrate Christmas.

Senator Diri gave the admonition during the state’s 2024 Christmas Carol of Nine Lessons at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall in Yenagoa.

The governor also urged his appointees to share whatever they got from the government with others, noting that if those privileged at this time learn to be their brother’s keeper, majority of Bayelsans and, indeed, Nigerians would have food to eat during the yuletide.

Senator Diri said the most important lesson about Christmas should be selfless love and sacrifice shown towards others.

The Bayelsa helmsman acknowledged the difficult economic times in the country but added that the period would soon be over.

“Christians have reason to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I also believe that no matter the hardship and hunger in the country, everyone will have something to eat this season if we learn to share even the little we have.
“For those who have, always give to those who do not have. If you are an official of government, please share with those who do not have.
“Everybody cannot reach the governor or the deputy governor. That is why we have over 5,000 appointees and if all of them open their hands, I am sure that 80-90 per cent of Bayelsans will have something to eat,” he said.

Also, Governorship Candidate of Lagos State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 General Election, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran (JANDOR), enjoined Lagosians to embrace brotherly love and kindness as the world celebrates Christmas which showcases the birth of Jesus Christ.

The PDP standard-bearer made the call in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr. Gbenga Ogunleye, a copy of which was made available to newsmen on Tuesday, describing Christmas as the celebration of a breath of fresh air in the relationship between God and mankind.

JANDOR said Christmas was a memorial of the love of God when He gave His all to express His love for humanity, urging Lagosians to pay keen attention to the message of love, peace, and sacrifice, which Jesus preached during his time on earth.

The PDP chieftain enjoined Lagosians to love their neighbours as themselves, do good to them, and wish them well, whether or not they belonged to the same faith or not.

“Religious harmony, peace and unity are some of the needed ingredients for development to thrive therefore religious leaders should always preach the message of love, peace, and good neighborliness to make the society a better and safer place for all,” he stated.

Similarly, renowned aviation expert and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti, Otunba Peter Obafemi called on Nigerians to embrace unity and faith during the festive season, while acknowledging the country’s ongoing socio-economic challenges.

The party chieftain in a statement on Tuesday stressed that Christmas extends beyond mere celebration, describing it as “a reflection of faith as a formidable virtue, one that constantly reassures us that redemption is within reach.”

Obafemi specifically urged Ekiti residents to join in prayers for Nigeria’s development and political redemption of the country.

“This special time of the year serves as a reminder of the essence of faith, love, and unity, even amidst the numerous socio-economic challenges we face as a nation
“I encourage you to join hands with other Nigerians in fervent prayers for the continued existence, socio-economic growth, and political redemption of our beloved country.”
