Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has sympathised with the people of Borgu Local Government Area over a tragic boat mishap that occurred along the Gausawa community in Malale Ward, resulting in the loss of many lives.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the Governor described the incident as devastating and heartbreaking, saying it was “one too many.”
He expressed deep concern over the rising cases of boat mishaps across several communities in the state, despite government efforts at the federal, state, and local levels to ensure safety on waterways.
The Governor noted that the recurring boat accidents—often catastrophic—are largely caused by human errors such as overloading and refusal to use life jackets, among others.
He emphasised that the negative impacts of such incidents could be significantly reduced if travelers and boat operators strictly adhered to safety regulations.
Governor Bago, a farmer by profession, stressed that his administration would enforce strict compliance with all inland waterways safety regulations through regular monitoring and evaluation, warning that violators would face sanctions.
He commended the efforts of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), local divers, and community volunteers who swiftly mobilised for rescue operations.

While extending his condolences—particularly to the bereaved families—the Governor prayed for Allah to repose the souls of the deceased, grant quick recovery to the injured, and bring comfort to all affected by the tragedy.
He assured that the state government, through relevant agencies, would provide support to survivors and the families of those who lost their lives.
According to reports, a boat carrying about 90 passengers was heading to Dugga village for a condolence visit after departing from Tugan Sule in Shagunu Ward when it capsized near Gausawa community in Malale Ward, due to overloading and collision with a tree stump, resulting in multiple fatalities.
Fifty people were rescued alive, while two were declared missing. A search and rescue operation is ongoing for the missing persons.
