Sokoto Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to use their one-year national service to promote unity, serve their host communities and initiate projects that will improve lives.
Aliyu made the call on Friday in Sokoto during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I corps members deployed to the state.
Represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Musa Balarabe, the governor described the NYSC scheme as a vital instrument for strengthening national integration and fostering understanding among Nigerians from different ethnic and religious backgrounds.

He urged the corps members to uphold the values of tolerance, respect and cooperation while interacting with people in their host communities.
Aliyu said the service year offered the corps members an opportunity not only to gain experience but also to contribute to the development of the communities where they would be posted.
“As graduates from various universities, you have great opportunities in future. I am calling on you to be good ambassadors of our great nation in the service year and after,” he said.
The governor specifically challenged the corps members to identify challenges within their host communities and develop practical initiatives to address them.
“I am therefore encouraging you as corps members to initiate changes and contribute positively to your host communities and state,” he added.
He assured them that the state government would continue to work with security agencies to safeguard their lives and property throughout their service year.
Aliyu also urged them to distinguish themselves through dedication and innovation, promising recognition for those who make outstanding contributions.
“Let your service year be marked by projects that improve lives, motivate communities and leave lasting legacies.
“Those amongst you that will demonstrate exceptional dedication, innovation and meaningful service will be celebrated and honoured,” he said.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Tyoyer Gabriel Ter, commended the Sokoto State Government for its continued support for the scheme.
Ter said the three-week orientation programme was designed to prepare the corps members for the challenges of national service by equipping them with relevant skills, knowledge and resilience.
He urged the corps members to take the orientation exercise seriously and approach their service with discipline, patriotism and a sense of responsibility.
The coordinator also appreciated Governor Aliyu for the ongoing work at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Wamakko and thanked the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for his continued support and concern for corps members.
The ceremony featured the administration of the oath of allegiance to the corps members by Justice Aminu Sifawa, who represented the Chief Judge of Sokoto State, Justice Sa’idu Sifawa.
