Google issues warning to 2.5 billion Gmail users after data breach

Google is urging billions of Gmail users to update their passwords and strengthen security after a data breach led to increased hacking attempts.

The company said earlier this month that one of its Salesforce databases had been breached. According to Google, the data involved was publicly available business information.

“Based on new information identified by GTIG, the scope of this compromise is not exclusive to the Salesforce integration with Salesloft Drift and impacts other integrations. We now advise all Salesloft Drift customers to treat any and all authentication tokens stored in or connected to the Drift platform as potentially compromised.

“On August 28, 2025, our investigation confirmed that the actor also compromised OAuth tokens for the “Drift Email” integration. On August 9, 2025, a threat actor used these tokens to access email from a very small number of Google Workspace accounts. The only accounts that were potentially accessed were those that had been specifically configured to integrate with Salesloft; the actor would not have been able to access any other accounts on a customer’s Workspace domain,” Google statement partly reads.

Fox News reported that no customer data was exposed, and the breach only affected Google’s internal Salesforce system, not consumer Gmail or Cloud accounts.

Still, the New York Post noted that hackers have taken advantage of the news to target Gmail and Google Cloud users. Because of this, Google has advised users to update their passwords and enable two-factor authentication.

Gmail and Google Cloud have about 2.5 billion users worldwide.

Google also warned people to watch out for suspicious activity, especially phishing emails that trick users into entering their login details on fake sites.
