Goods worth millions of naira destroyed in Ibadan fire

Goods and other valuables worth millions of naira have been lost to the fire incident that gutted herbal section of the popular Oranyan market in Ibadan South East local government area on Monday.

No fewer than twenty shops were affected but no life was lost to the incident.

Nigerian Tribune gathered the fire incident started around 2:45 am in one of the affected shops and later spread to the other shops.

Giving an eyewitness account, one of the occupants of residential buildings adjacent to the market who identifies himself as Nureni Akano, said they were woke up with thick flames that emanated from the scene of the incident.

According to him, “We put up efforts to resist the fire from spreading to other areas but to no avail as it became uncontrollable.

“We couldn’t trace the source of the incident but it might not be unconnected with the power surge.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fires Services, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka said the Fire Services Headquarters received a fire emergency call at exactly 23:25hrs on the incident.

He disclosed that the incident affected twenty (20) prefabricated shops out of multiple adjourning rows of shops.

According to him, “Properties worth millions of naira were affected while properties worth billions of naira were saved but no life was lost.

“Our personnel returned to station at exactly 3:36hrs”.
