Give priority to Ife township roads, Ooni tells Oyetola

Ooni of Ife, Enitan Ogunwusi

Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, on Saturday, described the deplorable condition of township roads in Ile-Ife, Osun State situation as an eyesore to the cradle of the Yorubas and called on the state government to pay attention to it and give it a priority in their roads rehabilitation projects.

The monarch made this known at the 2021 Zenith Colloquium tagged, “Ife Will”: Selected Wits, Axioms, Idioms, Proverbs and Epigrams in Ife Dialect” organised by Ife Zenith Club held at Ife City Hall.

Oba Ogunwusi who expressed displeasure at the neglect of roads in Ile- Ife by the state government, pointed out that, it was incredible to see motorists and vehicles plying the roads drenching with sweats before getting out of the roads which are full of potholes.

The royal father represented by the Alara of Araoodaye, Oba Segun Layade, in his remark however cried out that, “Ile-Ife is not an enemy of the government, we are friends of Governor Oyetola, we deserve good things. The government inaugurated 8.1KM road at Ipetu, our own roads also need attention.

In his own remark, the second in command to Ooni and Obalufe of Ife kingdom, Oba Adediwura charged Yorubas to embrace their culture by outwardly displaying it anywhere they may found themselves.

Oba Adediwura who said he was at the occasion as a friend of the club, argued that Yoruba culture remains classical among all other cultures in the universe.

Also speaking at the programme, Deputy Chief of Ife Zenith club, Justice Yinka Afolabi, explained that they discovered Ife is losing touch with the forebearers in terms of language, customs, tradition and culture.

“Ile-Ife was originally known for excellence and great civilisation. The Europeans acknowledged this fact but what we have now is a remnant of that heritage. That is why we are reviving it today.”

The guest speaker, Professor Adisa Ogunfolakan, Director of Natural History Museum from Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, urged parents to seek more knowledge about the culture, language and tradition of Ile-Ife and teach their children.

In his welcome address, Chief Zenithal Lanre Agboola stated that Zenith colloquium is set up to discuss contemporary issues, “bedevilling our nation in the general and dear city in particular and to prefer solutions to them. Topics covered in the past centred on, the economy, education, law etc.”

According to him, “Ife Zenith Club came into being in 1986 when a group of friends come together to form friends Advisory Club. This metamorphosed into Zenith Club, Ife and later at registration with corporate affairs commission became Ife Zenith Club. Ife Zenith Club is built on strong ideas and deep commitment. We are committed to the progress and development of Ile-Ife. Then we have been doing this by being a rallying point of intellectual discourse on issues that hamper development.”
