At least 28 people, including children, have been injured on Thursday after a car plowed into a crowd in Munich, Germany, in what police are calling a “suspected attack.”
Authorities have detained a 24-year-old Afghan national in connection with the incident.

Police clarified that there had been speculation about other individuals being involved, but they confirmed that, based on their current knowledge, the driver was the only person apprehended. “There is speculation about other people involved. Based on our current knowledge, we cannot confirm this,” they added.
Gunshot Fired During Arrest: Authorities have confirmed that a shot was fired “during the arrest” of the driver, but no further details have been released.
Incident Occurred Near a Union Rally: The incident took place in the Seidlstrasse area, where a rally organized by the Verdi union was underway. According to reports, some participants were on strike at the time.

Witness Accounts: Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with some individuals left “crying and shaking” in the aftermath. One witness reported that a “young man” was taken away by the police, and a person was seen “lying on the street.”
Increased Tension in Munich: The attack comes ahead of the Munich Security Conference, with high-profile attendees like US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expected in the city later today.
Patrick Howse, a journalist based in Munich, pointed out that the current political climate in Germany, with elections approaching and rising tensions, could have contributed to the intensity of the situation. “These streets… they’re not terribly wide. It’s easy for them to fill up very quickly,” Howse said, highlighting the risk posed by crowded spaces.
Investigation Ongoing: Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the driver intended to strike the crowd or if the crash was a result of confusion between the accelerator and brake. The investigation is still in its early stages.
