German govt inaugurates N39m rehabilitated sport facilities in Ogun

GERMAN Government on Thursday inaugurated the N39 million rehabilitated sport facilities for the Muslim Girls High School, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun, to boost sports development in the country.

A statement issued by the Media Consultant, Aderonke Bello in Abuja, stated that the Country Director, Dr Thomas Kirsch of the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) officially inaugurated the rehabilitated sport centre on behalf of the German government.

Kirsch, who was represented by the GIZ’s portfolio Manager, Mr Michael Sato, said the support was initiated in 2014 when government official visited the state government.

“The GIZ cooperation with Ogun State Government dates back to 2012 to ensure a better relationship in four areas of intervention in 2014.

“Focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency; Sustainable economic development; Technical vocational education training; Agricultural value chain development and a special initiative called Sports for Development in Africa (SDA).

“This very football ground we are officially opening today was rehabilitated with a multi-purpose court and changing room constructed.

“The upgrading project included a total construction budget of 95,000 Euro, today the site has been completed in time and certified successfully for this handover today,“ he said.

According to him, the new sports grounds will offer the students access to regular sport activities like football, volleyball, handball, lawn tennis and badminton.

The statement quoted, the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr Ingo Herbert as saying that it would bring development opportunities through sports.

“We would therefore like to use this opportunity to also acknowledge the support given by the German Government to your school in the area of IT, and specifically the donation of 10 sets of internet PCs and two printers.

“Team spirit is the secret of the success of the German economy and this should be emulated by Nigerians,” he said.

While thanking the German government, the Principal of the school, Mrs Ibrahim Wasiat said the construction and rehabilitation of sport facilities was German Embassy’s second fulfilled promises to the school.
