•Fixes unity summit for next week

The G100, a coalition of political leaders and stakeholders, has commenced consultations with key figures in Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections and has fixed Tuesday, August 18, 2026, for a summit of opposition parties in Abuja.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of G100, the group said representatives have already met with the leadership of six major opposition parties — African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

He said the engagements included national chairmen, presidential candidates and their running mates.

According to Lukman, the meetings followed G100’s Open Letter released on August 2, 2026, titled ‘Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition’, addressed to opposition leaders, leaders of thought, civil society and “Nigerians of good conscience”.

The group said the consultations were deliberately held away from media attention “in recognition of the sensitivity of many of the discussions and the need to allow party leaders to engage frankly and constructively without the pressure of premature public commentary”.

“There has been a clear recognition of the need for Nigeria’s opposition parties to work more closely together ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement said. “The leaders we have engaged have also acknowledged that achieving a credible and effective opposition will require sacrifice, compromise and a willingness to place the larger interests of the country above narrow partisan or individual considerations,” it added.

Lukman noted that the discussions were aimed at giving effect to the principles of the Ibadan Declaration, which calls for a united and competitive opposition alternative in 2027.

Unity Summit slated for August 18

G100 announced that preparations are underway for a ‘Summit of Opposition Parties’ scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in Abuja.

The summit, it said, will provide “a structured platform for the parties themselves to begin the necessary conversations on the modalities for achieving greater opposition unity”.

“The G100 does not presume to dictate the outcome of these conversations. Our role is to facilitate dialogue, build confidence and help create the conditions in which the participating political parties can openly consider the difficult questions of cooperation, sacrifice, accommodation and collective action,” Lukman stated.

He added that the group is working with party representatives to finalise modalities for the summit, stressing that the process will be “deliberate, inclusive and anchored on mutual respect”.

The statement reiterated the group’s position that “Nigeria’s democracy is strengthened when citizens are presented with a credible alternative capable of competing effectively for their mandate”, warning that fragmentation among opposition forces “serves neither the opposition nor the Nigerian people”.

“The consultations of the past week represent only the beginning. The task ahead will require patience, courage and, above all, sacrifice,” Lukman said. “The G100 remains committed to help facilitate the process of unity of Nigeria’s main opposition parties and leaders in good faith and in the overriding interest of Nigeria and its democracy,” he added.
