Future of fashion excites me, I’m committed to impacting the industry —Moses Orji, fashion model

Moses Orji is a fashion model, an entrepreneur, and a runway model. He was the face of the 2023 Nook International Fashion Weekend. He is also the founder of the fashion brand, King of Boys Collections. In this interview by KINGSLEY ALUMONA, he speaks about his journey into the fashion business and how the Nigerian fashion industry could be improved.

At what point did you realise that you would make a life and career in fashion modelling and business?

Fashion has always been more than just clothing to me. It is a form of self-expression, an art. My journey into the world of fashion modelling and business was not a straightforward one. However, looking back, I could pinpoint the defining moments that made me realise this was not just a fleeting passion but a lifelong commitment.

Growing up, I was always captivated by style and aesthetics. At that stage, I saw fashion as something fun  an escape into a world of creativity where I could be anyone I wanted to be. The first turning point came in my teenage years when I was scouted by a talent agency at a local event. I was taken by surprise, as I had never considered myself a model. However, stepping onto that first runway and seeing the energy of the industry firsthand was exhilarating. That moment planted a seed in my mind that perhaps this was something I could pursue seriously.

As I continued to model, I became increasingly fascinated by the business side of the fashion industry. I started networking with designers, photographers, and stylists, paying close attention to how brands were built and marketed. A pivotal moment came when I attended my first major fashion week. Seeing top designers present their collections and observing the meticulous planning that went into every show was eye-opening. I knew that if I wanted to have longevity in this industry, I needed to equip myself with the knowledge to build something sustainable beyond the runway.

As I gained more experience in the industry, I fully embraced the idea that fashion was not just a phase in my life but my true calling of lifestyle. Beyond the glamour and aesthetics, the business side of fashion intrigued me because of its limitless possibilities. While the journey has had its challenges, I am grateful for every experience that has led me to where I am today. The future of fashion excites me, and I am committed to growing, learning, and making a lasting impact in the industry.

What does fashion entrepreneurship mean to you?

Fashion entrepreneurship, to me, is the perfect blend of creativity and business. Its about bringing a unique vision to life through clothing, accessories, or innovative retail concepts. It requires a deep understanding of design, consumer behaviour, and market trends while also demanding resilience, adaptability, and strategic thinking. A fashion entrepreneur is not just a designer  they are problem solver, a trendsetter, and a business leader who takes risks to create something new and impactful.

I see myself as a fashion entrepreneur because Im passionate about both the creative and business aspects of fashion. I love the idea of building something from the ground up, whether its a brand, a boutique, or a digital platform that reshapes the way people engage with fashion.

One person I admire in the fashion business is Mai Atafo because of his innovation, vision, and ability to stay ahead of trends. His journey inspires me to push boundaries and develop my own unique brand identity.

Apart from your own brand, do you work or have associations with other fashion brands?

Yes. While my brand remains at the heart of my work, I actively collaborate with other fashion brands, both locally and internationally. These partnerships allow for creative synergy, industry innovation, and a broader positive impact. By working with like-minded brands, we share knowledge, expand our reach, and contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive fashion industry.

The fashion business in Nigeria is not that strong and lucrative, which is why most international fashion brands do not have offices and shops in the country. What do you think can be done to improve this situation?

The Nigerian fashion industry has immense potential. However, several key steps can help strengthen its growth and attractiveness to international brands.

First, improving infrastructure and ease of doing business, such as reducing import/export barriers and enhancing local production capabilities, can create a more stable business environment. Second, investing in fashion education and skill development will empower local designers and manufacturers to meet global standards.

Additionally, government support through favourable policies, funding, and trade incentives can boost confidence in the industry. Finally, promoting Nigerian fashion on global platforms through collaborations, fashion weeks, and digital marketing can increase visibility and attract international investment.

Regular fashion shows and exhibitions are one of the ways Nigeria can develop its fashion industry. Could you explain how such shows could impact the industry?

Regular fashion shows and exhibitions can significantly boost Nigerias fashion industry by providing designers with a platform to showcase their creativity, attract investors, and gain international recognition. These events create networking opportunities for designers, buyers, and industry professionals, leading to potential collaborations and business growth. They also help in setting trends, encouraging innovation, and elevating the quality of local designs to meet global standards.

Moreover, fashion shows promote tourism and media attention, positioning Nigeria as a fashion hub. By celebrating local talent and craftsmanship, these events can drive consumer interest, boost sales, and contribute to the industry’s overall development.
