An alumnus of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Dr Gbenga Ayodele Owolabi, awarded scholarships to 141 students during the 4th edition of the annual awards held at the university auditorium over the weekend.
The scholarships are part of the Renaissance Social Support and Development Initiative, aimed at supporting both indigent and outstanding students across various departments.
The scholarships were awarded in two categories: the first for the best students with the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in their respective levels (200, 300, and 500), and the second for indigent students needing financial assistance.
The scholarships are intended to help cover school fees, provide stipends, and assist final-year students with their project work.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) Professor Oluyamo, praised Dr Owolabi for his generosity, noting that he is the first alumnus to award scholarships to such a large number of students in the university’s history.
She encouraged other alumni to follow his example, highlighting the significant impact this support can have on students’ lives.
Dr. Owolabi, who has been providing scholarships to FUTA students for the past six years, promised to expand the awards to include outstanding lecturers and postgraduate students in the future.
The first and second editions of the awards, held in 2018 and 2020, focused on students from the Physics department, while the third edition expanded to 50 students from the School of Physical Sciences.
This year’s awards marked the first time scholarships were given across the entire university.
One of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Dr Owolabi, pledging that the students would continue to work hard to earn more scholarships and bring pride to the university.
The event was attended by the Dean of Students Affairs, Deans of various schools, Departmental Heads, Professors, Lecturers, the Alumni President Worldwide (represented by Dr Olaitan Adesomoju), and other principal officers.
