The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has introduced a new dress code policy and sanctions for violators in a bid to address indecent dressing within the university community.
This was disclosed in a circular posted on the school’s official X account on Thursday.
The new dress code policy, which has officially taken effect, outlines a set of rules on acceptable attire and grooming, mandating students to adhere to standards of appearance on campus.

Under the new policy, students are prohibited from wearing certain types of clothing and accessories deemed inappropriate for an academic setting. Items banned include:
Revealing outfits such as crop tops, mini-skirts, off-shoulder tops, and transparent clothing.
Sagging trousers, commonly associated with informal or “street” fashion.
Hairstyles considered “unconventional” or “distracting” by the university, including brightly dyed hair, elaborate dreadlocks, and unconventional haircuts.
Excessive use of accessories or makeup that, according to the university, may not align with a proper academic atmosphere.
The university management said the goal of the policy is to “promote discipline and modesty,” while also seeking to “create an environment more focused on academics” and “preserve the institution’s cultural and moral values.”
