The Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria (FTAN) has completed arrangement for its 26th AGM to hold at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, on July 20, 2023 with the theme: ‘Tourism Today and tomorrow: setting an agenda for the new administration.’
Delivering the lead paper on the sub-theme: ‘Community Involvement in Tourism Development: Pathway for Sustainable Tourism,’ is the keynote speaker, Otunba Wanle Akinboboye, a Nigerian culture and tourism icon, who owns the world’s first African themed beach, forest and river resort- La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort.
The session which will look into diverse ways of creating a brand and sellable products for the Nigeria tourism economy where stakeholders and government can collaborate for game changing tourism industry has four panelists to discuss on the theme: ‘Sustainable tourism: The need for sellable tourism products.’
The resource persons for the panel discussion include President of NATOP, Mrs Ime Udo; founder and Chief Operating Officer, Travel Tech Company, Mrs Clara Okoro; Vice President of Nigerian Hospitality and Tourism Investment Conference, Allen Effeh and the National Secretary of the Nigeria Association of Zoos and Wildlife Parks (NAZAP), Dr Kabir Ali.
Speaking on the main and sub-theme of the AGM, the president of FTAN, Mr Nkereuwem Onung, who has built a robust collaborative alliance since his inception as the driver of the umbrella body of all tourism association in Nigeria, said the theme is timely and prompt to do justice to the present situation.
According to Onung, “we are on ground, the narrative must change and that cannot happen in isolation but by creating avenue to engage ourselves through purposeful discussion, agenda setting and product conceptualisation and brand position to benefit and reposition our sector.
“For tourism to be meaningful and sustainable, we must have sellable tourism products that showcase sustainability as a core element, emphasising eco-friendly practices, responsible resource management, community involvement and respect for local cultures.
“It is essential to develop tourism products and experiences that not only prioritize sustainability but also meet market demand and attract customers.
“Sustainable tourism aims to minimise negative environmental, social and cultural impacts while maximising positive contributions to local communities and the environment.”
