The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, has ordered a thorough investigation into the tanker explosion in Majia, Jigawa State.
The explosion resulted in the death of 94 people who were scooping Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from a fallen tanker.
This directive was announced in a statement released to the press in Abuja by the Commission’s spokesperson, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide.
The Corps Marshal expressed deep concern and also instructed Commanding Officers at the various tank farms to ensure that all tankers adhere to minimum safety standards before transporting inflammable substances.
It was reported that the fire started when villagers rushed to scoop fuel from a detached tanker of a DAF vehicle that had crashed on the route about an hour earlier.
According to it, “the lone crash which had no casualties as the driver and conductor survived without any injuries, occurred when the DAF Tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit attempted to dodge a speed bump while on a high speed. The resultant impact of the driver’s action while on high speed, detached the tanker from the body of the articulated vehicle.
“While explaining that the unfortunate incident underscored the importance of adhering to safety regulations at all times, the FRSC boss urged all road users to exercise caution, and always await FRSC emergency and rescue operatives to handle any such emergencies.
He further stated that it behoved on the Corps to advise the public that whenever an incident of this nature occurs, they should endeavour to stay very far from the tanker because the product contained therein is always highly flammable and can result in severe injuries and deaths.
The Corps Marshal commiserated with the families of the victims, as well as the Government of Jigawa State stating that his thoughts and prayers are with the affected families and the people of the State.
The injured victims have been rescued at Ringim General Hospital, Jahun General Hospital, and Khadija Clinic Majia for urgent medical attention.
