The Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) has showcased its commitment to sustainable forest management, conservation of Flora and Fauna, climate-smart agricultural systems and community-based afforrestation and re-afforestation initiatives.
These efforts align with the goal of restoring 25 per cent of Nigeria forest cover.
FRIN made known its commitment recently when it participated in a two-day agricultural outreach event organised by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Onne, Rivers State.
The event, with the themed: ‘Agricultural Innovations and Smart Farming for Agribusiness Entrepreneurs in Southern Nigeria’ brought together stakeholders to promote sustainable agriculture and forestry practices.
FRIN exhibition stand featured a wide variety of economically, viable, multi-purpose tree seedlings, research output on indigenous tree species and interactive displays illustrating biodiversity, conservation and ecosystem restoration.
FRIN Research Scientist, Onne Station, Dr. Henry Okonkwo, delivered a scholarly presentation titled: Conservation of Garcinia Kola Hekel: Emerging Issues and Innovation, joined by a team of FRIN Research Scientists. The presentation highlighted strategic partnerships, smart-farming and ecosystem services. FRIN’s participation underscored the value of inter-agency collaboration, facilitating networking, knowledge sharing, and strengthened ties with IITA and other regional stakeholders.
Through exhibitions, presentations and seedlings distribution, FRIN continues to empower stakeholders with the tools and knowledge needed to build a resilient, sustainable agricultural future. As Nigeria navigates climate change and land degradation, FRIN remains pivotal in shaping a greener, smarter and more inclusive agribusiness landscape.
The Head, Swamp Forest Research Station, Onne Dr. J.O Ariwaodu who delivered the goodwill message on behalf of Zacharia B. Yaduma (Ph.D), the Director-General, Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria said that Nigeria is endowed with rich and diverse ecosystem and ecological landscapes from the costal mangrove swamp forest in the Niger delta to Shahel Savannah region in the North.
This diversity underscores the urgent need for robust collaboration and partnership among stakeholders in both in forestry and agricultural sectors. This call for synergy is pivotal in safeguarding our natural recourses, vast forest and agricultural asserts while ensuring a sustainable future for present and upcoming generations. Indeed, FRIN’s commitment to foresting collaboration with agencies towards building a resilient, greener future for Nigeria cannot be overstated.
