In a move to decentralise and improve the treatment of over one million glaucoma patients in Nigeria, the Maxity Glaucoma Foundation has unveiled its innovative consensus mechanism, the Proof of Medical Report.
The Executive Director of the foundation, Desmond Bassey, who stated this on Monday, said that the initiative is being driven in partnership with Phomax FT.
He said at the core of this transformative initiative lies the empowerment of glaucoma patients in managing their eye health as patients currently grapple with significant challenges due to a low doctor-patient ratio and the detrimental effects of brain drain on the healthcare system.
Bassey noted that by facilitating direct access to their medical reports and telemedicine services, patients can freely communicate with doctors, seek expert advice, and make informed decisions about their treatment. This shift towards patient-centered care empowers the glaucoma community, fostering active involvement in managing their condition, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes.
He also said that the foundation is advancing glaucoma care with blockchain technology which would ensure secure and transparent management of patient data and information.
By leveraging the decentralized and immutable nature of blockchain, he noted, patient records and medical reports are securely stored and accessible only to authorized healthcare professionals, adding that this innovative step enhances data privacy and fosters seamless collaboration among medical practitioners.
He said, “By decentralizing the system of treatment, we are targeting one million glaucoma patients. We are doing this in conjunction with Phomax FT and the core of this transformative initiative lies the empowerment of glaucoma patients in managing their eye health.
“The foundation’s visionary mission seeks to decentralize patient care, promoting transparency, and placing glaucoma patients at the forefront of their treatment journey.
“By empowering glaucoma patients and harnessing the potential of blockchain technology, we can undoubtedly make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by this condition, substantially elevating the quality of glaucoma care in Nigeria,” he added.
