As the world works towards providing adequate knowledge to combat wrong traditional beliefs that continues to affect the way people with disabilities are treated to ensure that they are given the opportunity to utilize their talents irrespective of their inabilities so that they can also be independent in life, many organizations in Nigeria have also taken up the challenge of fighting the cause of people with disabilities.

Miyetti Allah endorses Buhari for 2019

This became necessary following a report that there are approximately 25 million people with disabilities in Nigeria. This figure indicates that if the society does not find means of empowering them to aid their economic situation, the poverty index will increase because a great number of these people have a family member as primary care giver, stopping such from being fully engaged or productive and adding to the figure of people that are under employed.

Though much is being done to ensure they are given the chance to bring out the ability in their disabilities, there are still many that have not been reached. This is why many organizations are establishes for this work of passion.

One of such organizations is the Christ Foundation, a ministry unto the handicapped, established to minister specifically to the needs of people with physical challenges to enable them to be self generating and self sustaining.

The organization which is nongovernmental and nonprofit gives aids to people living with various forms of disabilities and pursue a policy that guarantees them a conducive environment and opportunity for total development of their potential, organize support programmes that enhance the knowledge  and ensure they are empowered to be financially independent among many other activities.

And as part of its commitment to this cause, the foundation last week held a Christmas party for over 500 people living with disabilities to further create a synergy among the community it has built to teach them to look out for each other and depend on themselves. And the party was not only for the people, their family members were also at the get together.

Christ Foundation strives to let people know that the importance of working together to include people with disabilities in nation building and ensures that it has a community where people living with disabilities could live a normal life and work together for financial independence.

The Christmas party was however not about wining and dining, there was also networking and empowerment for the people living with disabilities and their families as well as entertainment for the children.

450 children; handicapped and children of people with disabilities got to visit the Father Christmas grotto and get gifts free while six people were given wheel chairs. 14 people living with disability got cash support for their businesses, two people got sewing machines; one got a grinding machine while another got a shoe filling machine.

The empowerment is not the first carried out by the foundation this year as it empowers people with disabilities frequently, pays school fees, purchases examination forms, mentors and also attend to medical needs as it comes up amongst other forms of assistance.

The party was Christ Foundation’s means of celebrating Christ and giving hope to people with disabilities who otherwise had no one to celebrate them so that they would have a sense of belonging and confidence to face challenges
