The NEWBEC foundation organised free medical services to over 500 indigent residents of Edo State in the spirit of Valentine’s Day.
The Foundation also called on the federal and state governments to prioritise the health of the citizens which it said was one sure way of them being productive citizens.
The medical outreach, which took place around Uselu; Benin City, in the Egor Local Government Area of the state, was organised by NEWBEC to mark the 2054 Valentine’s Day.
The beneficiaries had free medical check-ups, and eye tests with over 150 free eyeglasses distributed and drugs were also supplied to those that needed them. There were also x-rays for patients, blood pressure checks, sugar level checks and others.
Speaking at the event, the Manager of the Foundation, Titilayo Abiodun, commended the beneficiaries for coming out to take advantage of the free services and thanked God for the event especially being the pioneer edition at home, Benin-city.
Abiodun also congratulated the beneficiaries of the events for taking their chances and advised them to also imbibe the habit of giving.
“We have discovered that there are many people that don’t know their health status and the ones that would want to know, may not have the money. So, the essence of this outreach is to draw these people and give them the opportunity to check themselves.
“There are those that are with eyes challenges and those that need glasses will be given. It is actually a good thing to give because God did give and has commanded us to give, hence NEWBEC is appealing to the general public and corporate organisations to support the foundation’s vision by donating financially to our accounts.” She pleaded.
In his own remarks at the event, Ebodaghe Emmanuel, a Senior Manager of NEWBEC said the Foundation had been on since 2019.
Emmanuel added that beyond health issues, “the Foundation is also into education and skill development, economic empowerment, social equality inclusion, environmental sustainability, emergency relief and support among others. It also has collaborative initiatives with other NGOs. Government and policy makers, educational institutions and others. “
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Glory Otabor, whose blood pressure was detected to be very high and quickly given some on-the-spot drugs to manage the situation, couldn’t hold back her tears.
“I am just going about my routine life, unknown to me that I was suffering from such a diagnosis. But I thank God for saving my life today with the intervention of NEWBEC who bought all these drugs in my hands and the one in my mouth”, she enthused.
Another beneficiary, Fountain Ezekiel, who was given a free optical examination and a free medicated eyeglass, thanked the sponsors for remembering home in such a time like this, saying, “I know how much this glass would have cost me in this economy if it was to be a clinic and so I thank them for coming to my rescue.”
