The Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation has recently visited the Anambra State Health Development Agency in Ekwusigo local government area of the state and also some primary healthcare centres in the LGA to donate drugs and other medical supplies.
According to the General Manager of the foundation, Ms. Amanda Obidike, the visit was in commensuration with World Diabetes Day, celebrated every 14th of November.
Obidike noted that the foundation’s team believes that the intervention and the collaboration with local primary health centres were to closely match service to the level of needs within the communities.
She stated that they are happy to work with local communities in Anambra and in Nigeria towards ensuring that people have fair and just opportunities to be as healthy as possible.
The beneficiaries of the intervention include Joint Hospital, Ozubulu; Irefi Health Centre; Reference Health Centre, Oraifite; Ibolo Public Health Centre; Ezumeri Public Health Centre; Awor Public Health Centre; Isingwu Public Health Centre, Umunakwa.
Others include Urudunu, Amakom, Umuezeopi and Ogbe Ezumeri public health centres; Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Convent; Boys Secondary School, Oraifite; and Community Secondary School, Oraifite; amongst others.
“We believe that community action, collaboration and health interventions play a vital role in effecting sustainable change for reduced health inequalities in our society,” she said. “With the goal to ensure quality and equitable healthcare for all, we have decided to tackle malaria, blood pressure, diabetes and infections in these local communities.”
Obidike stated that the foundation has placed on the ground some measures to ensure that the drugs are not sold to patients, but given out free of charge to them.
She further stated that the foundation partnered with a US-based organisation, the Voom Foundation, for the intervention.
She noted that the foundation is making arrangements for the commissioning of a specialist hospital to be sited in Oraifite.
“The medical facility will be first of its kind,” she said. “The foundation is hosting another medical fair in collaboration with a team of United States doctors under the Voom Foundation next month in Oraifite.”
Some of the beneficiaries of the medical intervention expressed their gratitude to the foundation and urged them to do more for their health centres and communities.
