Foundation advocates inclusive democracy to strengthen Nigeria’s unity

Focus on the Needy Care Foundation (FONEC) has called for a more inclusive democracy in Nigeria to ensure every voice is represented in the country’s political processes, thereby advancing unity, economic growth, and social cohesion.

Speaking in Maiduguri on Wednesday during a summit on political inclusion, FONEC’s Executive Secretary, Ibrahim Sa’ad, emphasized that “broadening the democratic space is crucial to building a society where no one is left behind.”

Sa’ad urged political parties, stakeholders, and citizens to “embrace diversity within communities, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, or ability, and create platforms for everyone to contribute to shaping Nigeria’s unity and future.”

“When a section of the society is under-represented in policy discussions, they feel marginalized,” he stated.

He warned that a lack of political inclusion could lead to unhealthy competition among political parties, causing disunity and sabotage.

“Certainly, we cannot consolidate and advance our democracy if some of the population is excluded from the political sphere,” he added.

Sa’ad called for actionable steps to transform Nigeria’s political landscape, explaining that “together, Nigerians can create a more inclusive democracy reflecting every citizen’s aspirations and potential.”

FONEC commended CISLAC’s leadership in fostering dialogue and collaboration among key actors, expressing pride in being a partner in this critical mission.

He said, “CISLAC promotes democratic governance, anti-corruption, and human rights in Nigeria through experienced professionals like Okeke Anya and Chinedu Bassey.”

The summit was funded by the European Union and supported by EU-SDGN, SOS Children’s Villages, CISLAC, and Corporate Accountability & Public Participation Africa.
