The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) at the end of its 40th anniversary conference in Kaduna lamented the high rate of drug abuse among youths in Nigerian schools.
In a communique read by Dr Zainab Ahmedxon Monday applauded the synergy recently created by the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to battle the drug scourge, especially in schools.
The communique reiterated its commitment towards a drug-free environment through different strategies, which include creating vibrant school programs to bridge the vacuum created by inadequate professional school counsellors.
FOMWAN identifies the sceptical acceptance of the effects of climate change and strange weather patterns, desertification, severe rainfall resulting in flooding and extreme temperatures.
To this end, it maintained that FOMWAN will continue to empower Muslim women to be able to be resilient in the case of climate change and its Mitigation.
The communique stated that FOMWAN will institute a tree planting project across communities and form Green Ambassadors Clubs in all FOMWAN Schools to ensure sustainability.
FOMWAN calls on the government, stakeholders, and individuals to take immediate action to address the challenges of climate change, drug abuse, and insecurity in the country.
The communique said the Conference witnessed change in Leadership from Hajia Rafiah Idowu Sanni , as Dr Fadimatu Sumaye Hamza emerged as the new National Amirah to pilot affairs of the Association in the next renewable two years (2 yrs).

Other executive members include, Hajia Zeenat Isiemekhan as vice president , PRO Hajia Hawau Abdullah, Da’wah Officer Khadijah Olahan, Asst Secretary Dr Halima Egberongbe among others.
The communique said the “conference was declared open by the Vice President, His Excellency Sen. Kashim Shettima, GCON, ably represented by the Hon minister of state for education, Prof. Suwaibah Ahmed. In attendance were the Wife of the President, Sen. Oluremi Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ably represented by Hajia Fatima Tajudeen Abbas, wife of the Speaker, House of Representatives FRN. Wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima represented by Dr Asabe Vilita Bashir, DG Nat women development centre.The Chief host of the international conference and Executive Governor of Kaduna State Sen Uba Sani, CON was ably represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza S. Balarabe.
