Members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday applauded the intervention of Nigerian Army and other law enforcement agencies during the rescue mission of victims of flood disaster which led to the displacement and death of hundreds of Citizens in Maiduguri and other States of the Federation.
The lawmakers who expressed delight during the debate on a motion of Urgent Public Importance sponsored by Hon. Ahmadu Jaha urged Federal Ministry of Water Resources to do the needful to avoid or prevent the reoccurrence of the same flood disaster in the future.
He said: “I rise to bring to the attention of this esteemed assembly the remarkable efforts of the Nigerian military and various law enforcement agencies during the recent flood disaster that struck Maiduguri, Borno.
“This disaster has had a profound impact on our communities, displacing many and causing significant damage to infrastructure.
“On the day of the flood, our military and law enforcement agencies responded with exceptional speed and coordination.
“Their swift deployment of rescue operations not only ‘saved numerous lives but also provided necessary aid and support to affected families.”
While acknowledging the rapid response of the Teams, he observed that the “military’s immediate response to the disaster showcased their readiness and commitment to humanitarian efforts, demonstrating that they are not only defenders of our nation but also protectors of our Citizens in times of crisis.”
Hon. Jaha also applauded the seamless collaboration between the Military, Police, and Local/State Governments demonstrating a unified approach to disaster management, ensuring that resources were optimally utilized for effective rescue and relief operations.
In the same vein, he expressed excitement over the impacts of the support enjoyed from various communities, stressing that, “beyond rescue efforts, these agencies engaged in community outreach, providing food, medical assistance, and shelter to those affected, which is commendable and necessary during such trying times.”
The Borno lawmaker also acknowledged the risks taken by these brave men and women who put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of others during the floods.
During the plenary, the lawmakers who observed a minute silence in honour of the departed souls as a result of the flood, unanimously resolved to “formally commend the Nigerian Military and all law enforcement agencies involved in the rescue missions during the Maiduguri flood disaster. Their dedication and heroism deserve our utmost recognition and appreciation.”
They also urged government’s support for the Nigerian military and other law enforcement agencies ensuring they have the resources necessary to continue their vital work in protecting and serving our communities.
To this end, the House tasked National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), North East Development Commission (NEDC) as well as all relevant agencies and Organisations to provide relief materials to the affected victims to alleviate their suffering.
