NIGERIA’S domestic aviation industry is witnessing a renewed wave of aircraft acquisitions as indigenous airlines embark on aggressive fleet expansion programmes aimed at meeting rising passenger demand, improving schedule reliability and strengthening their competitive positions.
In June, 2026 alone, two carriers, United Nigeria Airlines and Air Peace took delivery of three aircraft: two Boeing aircraft and one Embraer aircraft respectively.
The June aircraft acquisitions done through outright purchases give cautious optimism for operational prospects over the remainder of the year, as more aircraft are expected before the end of the year.
The development comes amid growing passenger traffic, increasing demand for air travel and efforts by airlines to overcome capacity constraints that have contributed to flight delays, cancellations and higher fares.
Air Peace Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Allen Onyema described the recent arrival of the aircraft, as a significant step in the airline’s growth strategy.
According to him, the E175 will enhance operational flexibility, expand market reach, and support the airline’s commitment to safe, reliable, and efficient air transport services across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

On their new acquisition and expansion initiatives, Chief Commercial Officer of United Nigeria Airlines, Mr Adedayo Olawuyi also stated that, beyond the airline taking delivery of the Boeing aircraft, they still have more on the way.
According to Olawuyi, their plan is to grow within the region and also internationally, just as they are looking at increasing their presence in West Africa, starting with routes such as Monrovia, Banjul, Dakar, Abidjan, and Conakry.
Industry analysts say the renewed investment signals increasing confidence in the Nigerian aviation market despite persistent challenges, including high operating costs, foreign exchange volatility, rising maintenance expenses and the soaring cost of Jet A1 aviation fuel.
