Members of the House of Representatives have directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist plank traders at Temidire Sawmill Plank Market along Osogbo Road in Iwo, Osun State, whose shops were gutted by fire on December 14, 2024.
The legislators’ resolution followed a motion by Mudashiru Lukman (L&K), the representative from Ayedire/Iwo/Ola-Oluwa Federal Constituency, on December 17, 2024.
Mudashiru moved the motion, highlighting the urgency of the situation and the need to provide assistance to the traders to enable them to continue their businesses.
Subsequently, in a February 5, 2025 letter addressed to and received by the Director-General of NEMA on February 7, Kamoru Ogunlana, the Clerk of the House, conveyed the resolution of the House for necessary action.
“The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, deliberated on the above motion and resolved to urge the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to victims of the fire outbreak at Temidire Sawmill Market in Iwo Local Government, Osun State,” Ogunlana said in the letter, a copy of which was made available to journalists.

The Clerk also dispatched another letter on the resolution to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) for expedited presidential action.
It is recalled that shortly after the fire outbreak, the lawmaker visited the market to assess the scale of the damage and assured his constituents of necessary legislative action to mitigate their losses.
He noted that disasters like this are usually damaging not only to the direct victims but also to members of the public who rely on their services.
He, therefore, advised the traders to be vigilant about any electrical faults in their shops and to closely monitor fires when burning waste to prevent unintended consequences.
Similarly, some foodstuff traders at Odo-Ori Market were affected by a rainstorm that destroyed their shops on Wednesday evening.
Following the incident, the lawmaker paid a solidarity visit to the scene, identified with and prayed for the victims, who were largely women.
While assuring them that he would escalate the situation to federal authorities for emergency assistance, the lawmaker donated N500,000 as part of the immediate relief the women needed.
He emphasized his commitment to prioritizing issues affecting his constituents and urged the victims not to feel dejected, assuring them that he would be with them every step of the way to ensure they received the necessary attention from the federal government.
Mrs. Mujidat Sarumi, the Iyaloja of Iwoland, appreciated the donation and expressed the market leadership’s gratitude to the lawmaker. She also stated that the market would count on his promise to facilitate a swift federal intervention.
