An early morning inferno destroyed property worth millions of Naira in a palm kernel factory located at the Industrial Park in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Monday.
It was gathered that the fire incident which razed down the whole company, destroyed all the raw materials and the processing equipment within the company’s premises was caused by an electrical surge.
An eyewitness explained that the fire incident started in the early hour of Monday and wreaked serious havoc on the factory before the arrival of the men of the Federal Fire Service to the scene.
Speaking on the incident, the owner of the factory, Mr Adesunloye Adeniyi, who said he had been in the palm kernel processing business for over ten years, said property and equipment worth N10 million were lost to the inferno.
He listed some of the equipment lost to the inferno to include, a heavy-duty power generating set and several raw materials used for processing palm kernel, saying “everything within the company were razed down by the fire.”
He said: “We just heard the spark from the (electricity) exchange box and the next thing everywhere was on fire. I only have five workers on the ground and we were not able to salvage because most of the materials are highly inflammable spreading very fast.
“The goods I have lost is more that N10 million as I have two machines and each is worth over two million naira. We had 500,000 tonnes of raw materials on the ground and each tonne cost N350,000 not to talk of the structure on the ground.
“This is what I have been putting together for over 10 years now, it has gone down the drain.”
He recalled that a similar situation almost occurred some time ago, but was averted as a result of precautions taken.
However, men of the Federal fire service who raced to the scene could not help as the whole factory had been brought down by the fire before their arrival.
