A women-focused finance platform, FinTribe, has taken its financial literacy programme to the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), seizing the opportunity to empower some of the students with cash support to kick-start their investment journey.
The event — which was held on the OAU campus, Ife, Osun State, on Friday — was themed ‘Girls Talk Money’ and organised by FinTribe in partnership with the Office of the Vice President Great Ife Student Union Government (SUG) of the university.
The founder of FinTribe, Jennifer Awirigwe, popularly known as Financial Jennifer, stated that the event aimed at mentoring young women looking to upscale their finances and encouraging them to leverage financial literacy to build a sustainable future for themselves.
Awirigwe added that FinTribe’s financial literacy outreach seeks to empower future generations and leaders, and also consistently champions financial education and inclusion.
She said that FinTribe believes in grooming young women and giving them the right knowledge to make better investment decisions.
In light of this, she urged other financial experts to join them in their mission to create a financially empowered generation of women.
“By equipping female students with financial knowledge, we lay the foundation for a future where women are financially independent and capable of making informed decisions,” she added.
Awirigwe and her FinTribe team — including Chinenye Enechukwu, the project coordinator, and Sandra Adebayo — engaged the students on topics such as building earning capacity, innovative business ideas, the power of early investing and compounding, and a guide to participating in leading banks’ public share offers.
The vice president of OAU’s SUG, Omoyosola Adekoya, commended FinTribe for impacting the students with financial knowledge and for the cash prizes they awarded to some of the students.
Adekoya stated that the success of the event underscores the importance of financial literacy and the positive impact it can have on the lives of young women.
In the course of the event, prizes were awarded to encourage and inspire the students.
Five students received 5,000 units of a bank’s stock, ten students won cash prizes to kick-start their investment journeys, and free copies of the book ‘The Smart Money Woman’ by Arese Ugwu were distributed to some of the students.
Awirigwe, while appreciating their partners for the success of the event, stated that they need more sponsors and partners to expand the outreach to other universities across the country.
