Financial burden, brand sustenance, challenges crippling fashion industry in Nigeria — Expert

An expert and popular fashion designer, Emmanuel Goodnews Ofonmbuk also known as Icon has revealed some of the challenges crippling the fashion designing industry in the country.

He emphasised the most significant challenge budding designers encounter is the financial burden of starting and sustaining a fashion brand.

According to him, “It’s not easy, from sourcing quality materials to renting studio space and marketing your creations, the costs can quickly add up. Many talented designers find themselves constrained by limited budgets, making it challenging to bring their ideas to life.”

Icon also highlighted the issue of limited access to resources in the Nigerian fashion scene. He pointed out that while Nigeria boasts a burgeoning fashion industry, access to essential resources and support systems can be limited, especially for designers outside major cities.

“Designers often grapple with sourcing high-quality materials, finding skilled artisans, and accessing industry-specific education and training.

“With so many designers vying for recognition and customers, breaking through the noise can be daunting. Aspiring designers must find ways to differentiate themselves and carve out a niche that sets them apart from the crowd.

“Staying relevant and meeting the demands of a diverse and discerning customer base can be challenging. Designers must invest time in researching market trends, understanding their target audience, and adapting their creations to ever-shifting tastes,” he added.

On the logistical challenges that fashion designers face in Nigeria, Icon said, “Transportation and distribution can be unreliable, leading to delays and increased costs. This can affect the timely delivery of products to customers and hinder the expansion of a fashion brand.

“Navigating regulatory requirements and government policies can be yet another uphill battle for fashion designers. Licensing, permits, and compliance with industry regulations can be time-consuming and require a deep understanding of legal frameworks.”

On the way out, the popular designer said, “I acknowledge that while the journey of a fashion designer in Nigeria may be riddled with challenges, the indomitable spirit of creativity prevails. Many aspiring designers, fueled by their passion and determination, continue to break barriers, find innovative solutions, and rise above obstacles. With perseverance and a strong commitment to their craft, Nigerian fashion designers are rewriting the narrative, contributing to the growth of the industry, and inspiring the world with their unique creations.”
