The Federal Government has hailed Maryam Bukar Hassan, the newly appointed United Nations Global Advocate for Peace, and expressed unwavering support for her in her mission to promote unity and peace worldwide.
Vice President Kashim Shettima made the commitment on Monday in Abuja. He described the appointment of the Nigerian spoken-word artist and peace activist as “well-deserved.”
Maryam becomes the first person to hold the role across the UN’s entire Peace and Security Pillar.
Receiving her and her team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Shettima praised her consistency in peace advocacy, recalling her viral video, “Violence Has No Religion,” as a defining moment in her career.
“That is the Nigeria of our dream,” the Vice President said. “I have watched that particular video more than a hundred times because it’s very inspiring.”
Citing former US House Speaker Tip O’Neill’s maxim that “all politics is local,” Shettima commended Maryam’s focus on the challenges and aspirations of her home state, Borno.
He assured her of the Tinubu administration’s full backing, describing it as a “pro-youth government” committed to peace and unity.
“Be rest assured, Maryam, you’re not alone. Whatever support you need, we’ll give you,” he said. “You are promoting peace and unity, not disunity. The grass is not greener on the other side. We can make this country great if we properly harness our human and material resources.”
Maryam, in her remarks, said her primary mission is to spread the message of peace globally, starting from Nigeria.
She sought collaboration with the Federal Government to create an enabling environment for her advocacy work.
“Nigeria is grappling with many security challenges. I am to go global, but I want to start with my own country. This is why we are here, to showcase what we are doing and to see how we can do this together, because we cannot do it alone,” she stated.
The UN peace advocate’s team revealed plans for a two-year campaign to build coalitions of young voices worldwide, working with creatives across countries to share ideas and strategies for fostering peace.
