The Federal Government is set to meet today with the leadership of the striking nurses, as efforts intensify to end the ongoing industrial action by health workers across the country.
Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, disclosed that the government’s negotiation team will engage with representatives of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), whose members embarked on a nationwide warning strike on Wednesday.
The seven-day action, now in its third day, has crippled operations in several public health institutions nationwide.
Tribune Online reports that NANNM had announced that its members across federal health institutions would embark on a seven-day nationwide strike beginning Tuesday, July 29, over unmet welfare demands.
The association, in a notice signed by its National Secretary, Enya Osinachi, and released by its President, Morakinyo-Olajide Rilwan, said the strike action was prompted by the Federal Government’s failure to respond to a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14.
The notice, issued in Abuja on Monday, followed an emergency National Executive Council meeting held earlier on July 10. NANNM-Federal Health Institutions (FHI) sector noted that the strike was intended to force proactive dialogue on critical issues affecting nurses nationwide.
“The strike, starting at 12 on Tuesday, July 29, will involve total service withdrawal across all Federal health institutions,” the notice stated.
