The Federal Government has commenced a three-day training on Safe School Response Coordination for security personnel in Jigawa State, as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to securing schools in the North and across the country.
Speaking in Dutse, the Head of Training at the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre (NSSRCC) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Assistant Commandant Joseph A. Shuaibu, stated that the exercise was designed to enhance the capacity of security personnel to ensure safe learning environments.
According to him, the training brings together state coordinators and desk officers and will equip them with modern skills, technologies, and collaborative strategies to tackle the growing threats of banditry and conflicts targeting schools.
“This training is intended to strengthen participants’ ability to ensure the security of schools. It aligns with the Federal Government’s Safe Schools Declaration and is part of NSCDC’s broader efforts to protect pupils, teachers, and school infrastructure,” Shuaibu stated.
He explained that the programme, supported by development partners, also involves officers from sister security agencies to ensure coordinated responses.
“As you know, Nigeria is a signatory to the Safe Schools Declaration. The aim is to ensure our personnel are familiar with its implementation guidelines and properly equipped to carry out day-to-day activities without deviation,” he added.
In his remarks, the Advocacy and Campaign Coordinator for Save the Children International (SCI) in Jigawa, Mr. Joseph Apeh, commended both the Federal and Jigawa State governments for investing heavily in child welfare and protection.

Apeh, who also served as a resource person during the training, disclosed that the programme was organized in collaboration with SCI and supported by the European Union (EU) to promote the implementation of the Safe School Declaration.
“This training is vital to keeping our children safe. The goal is for schoolchildren to learn in peace without the fear of attack or disruption,” he noted.
He added that the exercise would also raise awareness about the use of schools for military purposes by both state and non-state armed groups.
