The Accountant General of the Federation, Dr Shamisldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, has pledged support for the recognition and professionalisation of tax practitioners within Nigeria’s civil service structure.
Dr Ogunjimi gave the assurance when he received a delegation from the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), led by its President, Mr Innocent C. Ohagwa, during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.
In a statement issued by Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations, the Accountant General said the request for a dedicated career path for tax professionals, with entry at Grade Level 10, would be formally presented to the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
He emphasised that tax professionals deserve recognition in the civil service structure comparable to that accorded to lawyers, doctors and other specialised fields.
On Nigeria’s fiscal outlook, Dr Ogunjimi noted that the recently enacted Tax Reform Acts provide a historic opportunity to reshape the nation’s revenue framework.
He said effective implementation of the reforms would boost revenue generation, block leakages and reposition the economy for sustainable growth.
He also revealed plans to transform the Treasury Academy in Orozo into a world-class training institute to produce accountants of international standard.
According to him, the move will strengthen professionalism and enhance capacity for improved revenue mobilisation.
Earlier, CITN President, Mr Ohagwa, congratulated Dr Ogunjimi on his appointment, describing it as a testament to competence and years of meritorious service.
He appealed for his support in securing formal career progression for tax practitioners in the civil service.
Mr Ohagwa stressed the critical role of taxation in Nigeria’s economic development and called for deeper collaboration between the CITN and the Office of the Accountant General in areas of training and capacity building.
Such synergy, he said, would align Nigeria’s tax administration with global best practices and ongoing fiscal reforms.
