FG moves to extend CNG-powered transport scheme to states

The Federal Government on Thursday announced plans to extend the use of the CNG transportation system across the 36 states

Speaking while launching over 15 CNG-powered buses in Abuja, the Minister of Transportation, Said Ahmed Alkali said the launch is the pilot scheme.

Alkali noted that “this initiative is about creating a new path that prioritizes innovation, sustainability, and the well-being of every Nigerian. These buses symbolize our commitment to empowering citizens while transitioning to a cleaner energy economy,” Alkali stated.

He handed over the buses to the transport Union, NARTO, NURTW and RTEAN for maintenance stating that “the Union-operators would ensure the effective use and proper maintenance of these buses.”

“This is not just about today, but about creating a transportation system that will serve generations to come’’.

On his part, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo stated the initiative is commendable, describing it as a crucial step in reducing transportation costs for commuters and operators.

Ekpo explained that the focus of the federal government is to have cleaner and more affordable alternative means of transportation outside of the traditional fuel vehicles.

“This project is not only about buses; it is about transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape. It offers reliable, affordable, and eco-friendly transportation for all Nigerians.”

In his address, the Programme Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi said the buses will offer free rides in the Federal Capital Territory for 40 days, after which discounted fares will apply.

“With over 150 CNG fueling stations operational and plans for further expansion, we are paving the way for cleaner, affordable transportation infrastructure across Nigeria. This initiative creates jobs, reduces fuel imports, and supports Nigeria’s natural gas industry,” he said.

He noted that since October 2023, significant strides have been made, including increasing CNG-powered vehicles from 4,000 to 50,000 by the end of 2024.

Oluwagbemi said. over 1,000 technicians have been trained, and new standards for CNG vehicles and infrastructure have been established.

Speaking for transporters, Executive National President of RTEAN, Dr Musa Mohammed Maitakobi commended the government for alleviating financial pressure on Nigerians while promoting sustainability.

“These buses reduce costs for families and contribute to a greener environment. This initiative will roll out thousands of CNG-powered vehicles in the coming years, creating a cost-effective and sustainable transport system nationwide,” he said.

The embattled President of the NURTW, M.C. Olumo also attended the event.
