FedPoly Bauchi matriculates 5,068 new students

A total of 5,068 students have been matriculated into various academic programmes at the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The disclosure was made by the Rector of the Polytechnic, Alhaji Sani Usman, in a speech he delivered during the 2025 matriculation ceremony held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the Polytechnic’s Stadium Complex.

The Rector stated, “For the 2024/2025 academic session, the Polytechnic received a total of 6,928 applications for the various National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes run by the institution and admitted 6,266 students.”

According to him, “Out of that number, 5,068 registered. Here’s the breakdown: National Diploma (ND) – 3,151 and Higher National Diploma (HND) – 1,917.”

Speaking further, he said, “As we assemble here, I am reminded of the immense responsibilities that rest on our shoulders as educators, parents, and guardians. It is our collective duty to nurture and guide these young minds, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to excel in their chosen fields and contribute positively to society.”

He added, “I am delighted to share with you some of our modest achievements since I assumed office as Rector of this institution, which promise to significantly enhance our infrastructure and reaffirm our commitment to academic excellence.”

On the establishment of new directorates, he stated, “We have taken bold steps to modernize our administrative structure by establishing the Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Protocol; the Centre for Career Services; the Directorate of Open, Distance, Flexible and E-Learning; and the Women in Technical Education (WITED) Unit.”

“To demonstrate our resolve towards enhancing the quality and standard of our service delivery, we have renamed the former Directorate of Academic Planning to the Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance. These additions are aimed at improving communication, providing career guidance, enhancing educational accessibility, and promoting gender equity in technical education,” he added.

The Rector further stated, “In our quest to provide a conducive living environment for our students, we have partnered with private developers under a build-operate-transfer agreement to improve our hostel facilities.”

He added, “Additionally, we are grateful for the intervention from the Federal Ministry of Education, which has supported the construction of a new female hostel. These developments underscore our commitment to ensuring that our students have access to safe, comfortable, and modern accommodation.”

On perimeter fencing, he said, “To ensure the security and safety of our students and staff, we are currently installing a perimeter fence around the Polytechnic. This initiative is part of our broader strategy to create a secure and peaceful learning environment, free from external disturbances.”

He continued, “Recently, we hosted staff and resource persons from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for the accreditation of about 78 different programmes. This rigorous process ensures that our courses meet the highest standards of quality and are recognized not only nationally but internationally. It is a testament to our dedication to academic excellence and to providing our students with qualifications that are respected worldwide.”

To enhance examination integrity and maintain international best practices, “we have installed CCTV cameras in most examination halls to uphold academic integrity and prevent examination misconduct. This measure reflects our resolve to maintain the highest standards of ethics and fairness in our assessment processes.”

Sani Usman added, “As we speak, our contingents are participating in the ongoing Nigeria Polytechnics Games (NIPOGA). According to reports reaching us, our students are performing commendably in various events at the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State. Their achievements in sports not only showcase their talents and teamwork but also highlight the importance of extracurricular activities in fostering a well-rounded education.”

On staff welfare, he emphasized, “The Governing Council has approved promotions and cadre changes for our staff, reflecting our commitment to their welfare and motivation. We believe that a motivated and satisfied workforce is crucial to delivering high-quality education and providing the best possible support to our students.”

He further stressed the institution’s zero tolerance for examination misconduct, stating, “Because we place so much value on our certificates, this institution—let me reiterate—has zero tolerance for examination misconduct. We cannot afford to produce half-baked graduates and release them into society after working hard for years to build the Polytechnic’s reputation.”

According to him, “For every form of misconduct committed in the examination hall, there is a commensurate penalty. I therefore urge you to desist from any action or inaction that may be considered misconduct. Please read the Student Handbook for more guidance.”

“There may be other institutions that have followed in our footsteps, but we are among the first set of tertiary institutions in Nigeria to start the examination script auditing exercise. This demonstrates that while we protect our reputation, we also remain mindful of our students’ welfare. In this institution, what you see is what you get,” he added.

“As we embark on this new academic session, I urge our students to embrace the opportunities available here with enthusiasm and dedication. Let us work together to build a Polytechnic community that values knowledge, innovation, collaboration, and mutual respect. I encourage you to explore your interests, engage with your peers, and seek guidance from our experienced staff,” he appealed.

To the new students, he concluded with words of encouragement: “Your time here is a precious opportunity to grow, learn, and develop. Make the most of it by being diligent in your studies, participating in extracurricular activities, and contributing positively to our community.”

Some of the students expressed happiness at gaining admission into the Polytechnic, describing the environment as conducive to learning and character development, considering the institution’s positive image in the country.

The matriculating students were officially sworn in by Barr. Umar Wunti, who administered the oath and warned them against violating any of its terms, noting that any breach would attract appropriate penalties.
