The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) primary school teachers, under the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), have suspended their strike action.
The strike, which commenced on September 18, 2024, was in protest over the non-payment of 60% of the 25 months’ minimum wage arrears, the non-implementation of the 40% peculiar allowance, and other outstanding benefits.
Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas, Chairman of the NUT in the FCT, announced the suspension after an emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting in Gwagwalada.
He stated that the decision followed renewed commitments from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who directed the FCT treasury department to use area council chairmen’s 10% IGR accruals to pay the teachers.

The union acknowledged Minister Wike’s efforts and commitment to addressing other demands of the teachers, including the 40% peculiar allowance, N35,000 wage award, and the upward salary review of 25% and 35%, once the minimum wage arrears are settled.
Despite the suspension, the union expressed disappointment with the management of the area councils for failing to fulfill teachers’ entitlements, especially given the current economic hardships.
The NUT urged teachers to resume their duties immediately, starting Tuesday, October 8, 2024, and assured them that efforts to secure their outstanding entitlements would continue.
