A fire broke out on Wednesday at the popular Eco Fitness Hub, located on 4th Avenue in the Gwarinpa district of Abuja, the nation’s capital.
According to the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) Search and Rescue Team, the fire began around 10 AM and was contained by noon.
The blaze originated in the lounge of the fitness center and quickly spread.
It was brought under control by a combined effort of the FCT Fire Services, Federal Fire Services, FEMD, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The FCT police command and the Nigeria Red Cross were also at the incident site.
There were no casualties from the incident. Most of the fitness equipment at the gym was, however, destroyed by the fire.
In a statement issued to newsmen on Wednesday by FEMD’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, while the Ag Director General of FEMD, Engr Abdulrahman Mohammed, appealed to FCT residents to be cautious as the dry season sets in.
Engr Abdulrahman advised that electrical appliances must be switched off when not in use. He also cautioned against indiscriminate bush burning.
