Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu and Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji for second terms in office on Monday.
The announcement was made during an All Progressives Congress (APC) event held at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado Ekiti.
Fayose, known for his outspoken nature and political fluidity, declared his support despite his continued membership in the opposition PDP.
“I want to join all well-meaning Nigerians, particularly Ekiti leaders and followers, to endorse publicly without reservation, the President and Commander of the Armed Forces, President Bola Tinubu, for a second term and to equally endorse our Governor, Abayomi Oyebanji, and his deputy for a second term,” Fayose stated.
He emphasised the significance of the gathering, noting the presence of “all the former governors of this state, the leaders and national assembly members of this state and the people that matter, including myself, unanimously without hiding anywhere.”
Fayose added, “I am not a member of this party and I can never be,” affirming his PDP affiliation while expressing support for the APC leaders.
Last week, Fayose declared on Channels Television’s program, Politics Today, that the former ruling party would finish fourth in the next presidential election.
The former governor pointed out that the party’s internal crisis and the alienation of long-standing members have diminished its capacity to put up a strong performance in the election.
He lamented that the PDP is now a shadow of its former self because of
“repeated acts of disrespect and sabotage against loyal members” by party leaders.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the PDP in Ekiti State called on Fayose to leave the party rather than publicly ridicule it.
Governor Oyebanji has previously received similar endorsements from other former Ekiti governors, including Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo and Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who are both APC stalwarts, during an anniversary thanksgiving in October 2023.
At that time, Fayose had also expressed his support for Oyebanji’s second term, though his endorsement of President Tinubu appears to be a newer development.
