From oversized denim jackets, to bandanas, vintage scarves and shirts, mom jeans (baggy jeans), boot cuts, skirts in full pleats, sneakers, converse and vans, bum bags, jellies, flannel shirts, cropped tops, fez caps, the list of creative fashion comebacks go on.
Interestingly, 90’s fashion is also represented in hairstyles such as braids, cornrows, bunny afros, straight silky short hair, among others.
It is important to note that when rocking 90’s styles, care must be taken to get the overall look just right, else, you may end up looking trashy. To look stylish and appropriate the retro way, take a cue from the steps below:
Grungy style
This is a punk/sloppy look that doesn’t require much time. Wear loose fitting clothes, for instance, a t-shirt over baggy jeans or mum jeans; ripped baggy jeans on a t-shirt. For this look, the hair doesn’t need too much work. Inspiration for t-shirts for this look can be taken from clothes that have famous logos on them.
For this, wear baby doll dresses – these dresses are usually floral prints and short-sleeved, and can be paired with boots, sneakers and jeans jacket to give the 90’s feel. Body conscious gowns; crop tops paired with high waist jeans, and tight-fitting tees were also trendy for women in the 90’s and can work for this look. Get creative by adding skater skirts. Pleated skirts can also be rocked with crop tops or fitted tees and a pair of sneakers.
Accessories
You can use multicolored hair clips, headbands, bandanas or vintage scarves. You can also add colourful beads to your braids – wooden beads will bring out the best effect.
Plaids
Also known as flannel shirts, you can spice up the look with plaid skirts, cardigans, overalls or plaid dresses.
Overalls
For creative effect, leave the clasps undone.
