Family seeks President Tinubu’s intervention on alleged lawlessness by Housing Authority

The Kuje Amuwo Chieftaincy Family has written to President Bola Tinubu through his Chief of Staff, asking him to intervene in what it alleged as gross abuse of power, contempt of court and unlawful actions by the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and the Nigeria Police Force.

The family, represented by the Oba-in-Council and supported by their legal advisers, O.M. Osobase and Comrade Akpan S. Mark, highlights a prolonged legal battle over a large expanse of land located at 6th and 7th Avenue, Festac Town, Lagos, claiming that the land in question was acquired in part by the Federal Government in 1976 for FESTAC ‘77.

They said that after the festival, a significant portion of the unused land, legally belonging to the Kuje Amuwo family, was allegedly encroached upon by FHA officials and private individuals engaged in illegal sales.

The family also accuses the FHA of ignoring a restraining order issued by the Lagos State High Court in September 2023 and its officials orchestrated demolitions of properties on the disputed land.

These actions were allegedly carried out under the protection of armed police detachments, reportedly sourced from the Inspector General of Police’s office and it was alleged further that residents of 6th-7th Avenue reportedly suffered from sporadic gunfire, intimidation and the destruction of homes and farmland.

The family describes these actions as acts of “terrorism” aimed at dispossessing the rightful landowners and their tenants after the land has undergone extensive litigation.

It was further alleged that despite the ongoing legal process, FHA officials continued to demolish properties and intimidate residents, undermining the judicial system.

The Kuje Amuwo Chieftaincy Family consequently call on the President to immediately halt further demolitions and respect court rulings as well as conduct an independent investigation into the FHA’s actions and the alleged involvement of police officers.

The family asked the president to hold those responsible for these violations accountable, emphasising the need for the government to uphold the rule of law, preserve the integrity of the judiciary and ensure justice for affected residents
