Experts call for creation of more medical rehabilitation centers

As the world celebrates Occupational Therapy Day, experts have called on the federal government to create more medical rehabilitation centers across the country to bring out abilities in individual disabilities.

This was made known in a chat with Tribune Online by the trio of Wahab Adisa; Akinboyowa Akinkunle and Efunsanmi Temitayo, on Sunday, in Abeokuta.

Adisa noted that more occupational therapist should be recruited into the service of the federal and state governments, in order to assist people with various medical challenges like Down Syndrome, spinal cord injury among others.

He explained that occupational therapist worked on different conditions whether congenital or acquired to make different individuals irrespective of age and status useful for themselves.

Adisa said, ” World Occupational Therapy Day is a global event. It is a way of creating awareness about how an individual with health issues can be dependent and carry out daily activities.

“We look at how we can help individuals to fit into different day to day activities. We have department in most of the tertiary institutions in the country.”

In his contribution, Akinboyowa, called for the recruitment of more occupational therapists in all government tertiary and secondary health institutions, so as to enable them discharge their duties effectively and efficiently well.

While Efunsanmi also advocated for the creation of occupational therapy departments in other higher institutions in the country, and also encouraged admission seekers to study the course.
