Excessive sex, alcohol can cause cancer, Nigerian men warned

An urologist, Dr Chidiebere Ogo, has warned Nigerian men, especially those above 40, that excessive alcohol consumption and sexual activity could increase their risk of developing prostate cancer.

Ogo, a Chief Consultant at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State, issued the warning during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, highlighting unhealthy lifestyle choices as major contributors to the rising cases of prostate cancer in the country.

He noted that prostate cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among men over 40 and urged men in this age group to prioritise early cancer screenings. “Early detection and timely treatment are key to survival,” Ogo stressed.

The urologist also emphasised the importance of a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and a diet rich in vegetables to boost immunity against cancer.

He further called on both federal and state governments to establish research centres aimed at understanding cancer causes and advancing treatments in Nigeria.
